Digital Strategy Article A Real WordPress Redesign Story: From Outdated to Extraordinary

Sometimes a "quick fix" isn't the right answer, and the honest thing to do is say so. That's what happened with a Pinellas County pet care business that hired me to patch a few issues on her existing site. Once I looked closer, it was clear the real problem was the whole site: slow, not mobile-friendly, reused photos, and barely any real content explaining what she actually did. We rebuilt it from the ground up on WordPress, kept her existing color palette by request, added real copywriting based on her own voice, and built in proper SEO from day one. Her reaction: "I really love my site, it looks great and communicates how I am and what I do." Here's the full before and after.

Many of the website redesigns I do starts the same way: a business owner reaches out about a small fix, and once we dig in, it becomes clear the real problem isn't a broken button or a typo. It's that the whole site stopped representing the business a long time ago.

That's exactly what happened with a pet care business here in Pinellas County. She originally hired me to patch a few things on her existing site. Once I got in and looked around, I gave her the honest answer: patching this wouldn't fix the real issues, and a full redesign would serve her much better. She agreed, and the result is one of my favorite recent projects.

What the Old Site Actually Looked Like

Here's the old homepage.

The problems weren't cosmetic. The site was slow, wasn't mobile-friendly (a serious issue when most pet owners are searching from their phone while their dog is already at the door), and reused the same handful of photos across multiple pages. There was very little actual text explaining what she did or why someone should trust her with their pet. It didn't say anything about who she was as a caregiver, and it wasn't easy to figure out how to actually book her.

For a business built entirely on trust with people's pets, a site that looks generic and hard to navigate works against you before a visitor even picks up the phone.

What Changed

Here's the new homepage.

I kept her existing color palette; she liked it, and honestly it fit her brand well, so there was no reason to change it just to change it.

Everything else got rebuilt from the ground up on WordPress: new layout, new structure, new photography placement, and real copywriting based on her own words about how she cares for people's pets.

The site is also now fully mobile-friendly, which matters even more for a pet care business, since a lot of her clients are searching or booking from their phone on the go.

While I was in there, I also handled the on-page SEO groundwork (proper headings, page titles, meta descriptions, local business info) so the new site started strong instead of needing a second round of fixes down the line.

  Old Site New Site
Mobile experience Not mobile-friendly Fully responsive
Photos Same handful, reused repeatedly Organized, varied, purposeful placement
Copy Minimal, unclear on services Clear, complete copy explaining her care approach
Navigation Confusing, unclear path to booking Clear services, clear meet & greet and booking flow
Calls to action Unclear, buried, or missing Clearly placed CTAs guiding visitors to the next step
Contacting her Not obvious how to reach her Simple, visible way to get in touch from any page
SEO foundation None in place Proper headings, meta data, and local SEO setup from day one
Site speed & Core Web Vitals Slow, sluggish to load Noticeably faster, passing Core Web Vitals

If your site is starting to feel like it's working against your business instead of for it, let's talk about what a redesign would actually look like for you.

What the Client Said

The best part of a project like this isn't the finished design, it's hearing what it actually meant to the person running the business.

"I really love my site, it looks great and communicates how I am and what I do."

"I got more than I expected."

That's the outcome I aim for on every redesign: not just a site that looks better, but one that actually sounds like the person running the business and makes it easier for the right customers to find and trust them.

If Your Site Feels Like It's Holding You Back

If any part of this sounds familiar, an outdated look, slow load times, unclear messaging, or a site that just doesn't feel like "you" anymore, that's usually a sign it's time for a real conversation, not another small patch. Sometimes the honest answer is a quick fix. Sometimes, like with this project, it's a full rebuild. Either way, I'll tell you which one you actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did a "quick fix" turn into a full redesign?

L
K

For a simple brochure site with a handful of pages and a tight budget, yes, they've genuinely improved. They start to struggle once you need multiple service or location pages, custom functionality, or serious page speed and SEO performance.

Did the client have to change her branding or colors?

L
K

No. She specifically wanted to keep her existing color palette, and I built the new design around it rather than starting from scratch on branding.

What platform was the new site built on?

L
K

WordPress, with a full custom rebuild rather than a generic template, including new copywriting and on-page SEO setup from the start.

How long does a redesign like this typically take?

L
K

It depends on the scope, content needs, and how much back-and-forth is involved in copywriting and revisions, but a project like this is a multi-week process, not an overnight swap.

My website feels outdated too. How do I know if I need a full redesign or just a few fixes?
